DMTools (significantly) updated
posted by James Kay

Image

We are pleased to announce a significant update to DMTools is now available in the Appstore! This version includes status effects, a built-in help and instructions system and, most excitingly, is now a universal app with a specially designed iPad interface (both landscape and portrait orientations)!

Work on DMTools continues, and we have big plans of our own, though we still invite you to use the "feedback" button from within the app itself to send us any requests, comments or issues you might have. Also, don't forget to give DMTools a rating in the appstore, we'd appreciate it!

DMTools can be directly downloaded from here.

Piczle Lines v1.3: new puzzle bundles out now!!
posted by James Kay - (6 replies)

Image

We have been absolutely overwhelmed by the positive response Piczle Lines has been getting, from the mainstream media, gaming websites but most importantly the endless stream of positive user ratings and reviews on the Appstore! We noticed a lot of people were finishing the story mode and currently available puzzle mode bundles, so we have decided to release a few more.

If you update your game from the AppStore you will find, alongside a few interface tweaks and minor bug fixes, two new puzzle bundles in the in-game store. These contain 4 puzzle packs of 20 puzzles each (that is a total of 160 new puzzles!) to be played from the game's puzzle mode.

The Activities Bundle contains 80 medium-sized puzzles for fun and relaxation. The Wildlife Bundle contains 80 huge, extremely hard puzzles for expert players only! Trust us, these will be challenging! So whether you want to play Piczle Lines just for fun, or you feel you need a good challenge, the in-game store provides!

Keep an eye open for future puzzle bundles!

Help out your indies
posted by James Kay

Our fellow independent developer at HeadCase Games is full of great ideas that we love to rip o...hommage. In a recent post he suggested posting banner ads, for free, for fellow independent developers. Seeing as we have our own advertising section to the right of where you are looking RIGHT NOW, we thought this awesome and altruistic idea is worth stealing.

We know how hard it is to get exposure in this rough, tough world of independent development, so we are offering small, independent developers free banner advertising space to be randomly circulated in the ad space to the right. If you have a game out, and are having a hard time getting exposure, feel free to contact us at info@score-studios.jp. We'll have some arbitrary rules, which we'll make up on the spot, as to whom we would allow this free opportunity, but generally if you're an indie we'll probably love you lots and gladly put your ad up.

Piczle Lines papercraft Professor Matrix
posted by James Kay

Image
Piczle Lines has had a very good start in the Appstore over the weekend (download it for FREE here!). Not only are people rating it, and rating it well, a lot of you have left marvelous reviews! We're both humbled and stoked, so glad people are liking it! It has been on the "new and noteworthy" list in the puzzles category, and has already broken through to the top 100 in several countries. We couldn't be more happy!

To celebrate Piczle Lines doing so well, as well as to satisfy our own paper model crafting Muse, we've released a cool papercraft Professor Molecule Matrix for you to print out and build. It is in PDF format and can be found on the Piczle Lines games page here, or downloaded directly here. We hope you'll enjoy it!

On that bombshell...
posted by James Kay

Despite the fact things have been fairly quiet recently we have in fact been very busy behind the scenes. Paul has been going through all the great and supportive feedback DMTools has received since its release, something we are both humbled by and full of gratitude for, and submitted an update which is currently still under review at Apple. We are guessing they are a little swamped by submissions since the OS4 switchover, but keep your eye on the updates page for the latest version of DMTools when it gets approved.

We are also putting the finishing touches and doing some heavy testing of our next game, which we hope to submit soon. We're rather excited about it, but will give you more information at a later date.

And besides all that we have been working together with several other companies on various contracts, including Wizcorp, who just this week released their first game, "Ka-Boom", for which Score Studios helped out with the design and provided the artwork. It's an Augmented Reality game available through Sekai Camera, so either download or update this free app and find it under the "games" tab.
Image

Its a fun AR game where you plant cartoon bombs in your actual immediate environment and find other peoples' which you will then have to try and defuse. The more people play it, the more hectic it will become and the more littered your environment will be with bombs and the marks of your defeated rivals, so spread the word and get everyone playing! We wish to congratulate Wizcorp on their great work and the release of what is hopefully their first of many games!

DMTools released!
posted by James Kay

Image
Neccesity is the mother of invention, as they say, so when our own Paul, a hardcore Dungeons & Dragons player and current Dungeon Master, couldn't find the right tools to help him out with his duties, he created his own. He crafted DMTools, a robust Dungeon Master helper with all the features you could need, which we are now proud to release to the wider public.

It's the kind of utility we want to add features to, so if you have any requests of general feedback, please don't hesitate to let us know and we'll add it to our own, already extensive list of new features we want to include in the next update. You can either email us at info@score-studios.jp or let us know on the forums.

Paul is writing a blog post about the why and how of DMTools, which will give you some more insight into the creation of this app and why he figured it'd turn out this useful!

In the meantime, you can get DMTools right now, here from the games page or here directly from the Appstore!

Talk to us!
posted by James Kay

Hurrah, the forums are up! It has been a while coming, we admit, but finally they're here. If you have any comments on news items or blog posts, or just let the world know you are "1st!", or discuss our games, or let us know about technical issues, or just want to chat about nothing and everything, that is now possible! Or rather, it was always possible, of course, but now it can be done on our own Score forums!

You'll see that each news item and blog post has a direct link, that will take you to the very page where you can comment or join in on the discussion. There is also a rather sizeable "FORUM" button at the top of the page now, that will take you right there.

We would love to hear your feedback, but remember, the forums are for everybody, so keep it clean and pleasant! Also, feel free to ask us anything; if you want to write us about something specific on our blog, we're all ears!

Score Studios-designed Nanibird spotted in the wild
posted by James Kay

Image

Japan-based American illustrator extraordinaire Josh McKible is the creator of the Nanibird Project, an ultra-cool papertoy project based on a simple bird design, that he creates a raft of different visual designs for, but also invites other creatives to contribute to. I have had the honour of contributing a design called the "Gamebird", based on a certain handheld gaming console of the past.

This month is the Breda Graphic Design Festival, in the Netherlands, which features a paper-art and papertoy exhibit called "Paper Cut". Josh has chosen a few of his own and contributors' favourite designs for a Nanibird compilation on display at this show, including, I am flattered to announce, the Gamebird design by yours truly.

The Score Studios "Gamebird" design can be spotted this month and next, in the wild, at the Graphic Design Festival or downloaded for your own pleasure through Josh's site, in a special package containing all the featured designs. Get it here and get it now! Photos of the Paper Cut exhibit can be seen here, on a Flickr feed by Marshall Alexander, who has also very kindly given me permission to use one of his photos in this news item, above.

Bailout and Score Video Poker now ad-supported
posted by James Kay

Image

From today we have ad-supported version of both Bailout and Score Video Poker on the Appstore. What does this mean for you? It means you can now get both games absolutely FREE! However, small adverts will appear in the games. They don't interfere with the gameplay at all, but if you want to support us as independent developers the paid versions, entirely advert-free, are still available. Either way, we just want as many people as possible to enjoy these games!

You can get the ad-supported version of Bailout here, the paid version here.
Score Video Poker with adverts is available here, the paid version here.

Help us spread the word via Twitter or Facebook!

Watch this space!
posted by James Kay

It's been a mad time, with very few updates on this site, in either the blog or news sections. Apologies for that! The reasons are numerous; between working a few contracts and developing our next two games there has been very little time to breathe, let alone write. But don't fret, we're working on it.

We were featured this week on game-industry site Gamasutra, in an article written by Tokyo-based freelance writer and jolly good egg Ryan Winterhalter. We've received many complimentary comments about that article, for which we are very grateful and rather humbled.

Now we have Dimitrios on board as R&D Director we've seen great improvements in our engine-side technology, and we're all tremendously excited about our progress. So excited, in fact, we've been pushing ourselves a little hard. We hope to be able to reveal our upcoming game soon, so keep an eye open on our site and Twitter feed!

With your continued patience, and our promise to deliver more words, through this site, right into your eyeballs, we hope you'll be as excited about our immediate future as we are!

If you have any specific requests for desired future features, please don't hesitate to tweet any of us; our Twitter feeds are accessible from the ABOUT page, or email us at info@score-studios.jp

Score Studios sees 50 percent growth
posted by James Kay

We are very happy to welcome to Score Studios our new R&D Director Dimitrios Chamouratidis. Mr. Unpronouncable here will be charged with our engines, making sure our multi-platform strategy will come to fruition. He has his work cut out for him, as we are currently working on a title that we plan to release not only on iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, but also PC, Mac and Linux.

Dimitrios comes with a packed resume and heaps of experience, having worked on prestigious titles such as Pokemon, Star Ocean and Destruction Derby. And as if the name wasn't somewhat of a giveaway, he is Greek, so he'll also advise us on the best ouzo to drink. No more bad ouzo for us! We have added his profile to the "ABOUT US" page on the site, so check there if you want to know more about this tall, dark and handsome stranger.

With Dimitrios being an engine coder extraordinaire we now have all our bases covered and can look forward to a glorious future over many different platforms! Welcome, Dimitrios!

Happy Valentines day!
posted by James Kay

Image

We love you, we really do. I know you probably think we say this to everybody, and sure, the others, they are very cool and sexy too, but you, there is just something about you, you're definitely our favourite!

In fact, just to prove how much we love you we want to give you a present: a free copy of our beloved and award-nominated game Flock It! for your iPhone or iPod Touch. It's waiting for you at the Appstore right now. You should pick it up before the weekend is over, though, as after that it will go on sale at a special reduced price, but for now, it's entirely free just to show how much we care about you.

But if you already have that someone special in your life, hey, that's okay. Sure, we're devastated but we aren't the jealous type and we just want you to be happy. Why don't you tell them about Flock It! and how they can get it for free this weekend? I know we made this Valentine's card especially for you, but hey, we don't mind if you send it on to that someone special. You could download it from this link: http://score-studios.jp/devblog/iheartewe.jpg
and attach it to an email, or repost it on Facebook or Twitter, anything, we don't mind. It's yours, we want you to have it, to do with as you please. Just go get them, tiger!

Lots of love,
Score Studios

More videos will be uploaded later, including more parts of the Flock It! walkthrough.

Flock it! and Clock it! updates available now!
posted by James Kay

At long last the mega-update for Flock It! is available on the Appstore! Aside from some minor fixes it adds an extra 15 levels to the game, basically doubling it in size, adds two more mini games, Facebook posting and an achievement system granting you awards for achieving certain goals in the game. The new levels also add new graphic elements, taking place in autumn, winter and spring, with a whole new obstacle to deal with: the scarecrow; these don't actually harm the sheep but they will try to run away from them.
If you've played Flock It! before, some of the special achievement awards will be retro-active, meaning you won't have to replay anything to get some of them. On start-up, after you've updated, you will see messages pop up telling you if you've already won some awards.
The Flock It! update is available from the Appstore here. Or simply check your iTunes Applications tab for updates.

On top of all this, the new version of Clock It!, the Flock It! themed clock application, is also available. The new seasonal graphics have been implemented here as well, as well as making the flocking when you tap the screen smoother. This application is totally FREE and available from the Appstore here.
